Eclectic
pagan artist
Dan Campbell is an eclectic pagan
artist with wide ranging interests including Druidry,
Neolithic prehistory, shamanism, Celtic and Scandinavian
paganism, poetry, oil painting, and West African
polyrhythmic drumming. His first exposure to
neo-paganism was with Celebrate The Circle (at the Eno
River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham, NC),
during its inception in 1991. Recently, he's been
involved in Carolina Spirit Quest's events, beginning
with Quest Special: Blood, Stones, Runes in October of
2001. Dan says about his work “I like to think of my
work as Pagan icon painting. I use techniques of oil
painting first developed during the Renaissance, when
oil painting was in its infancy. Colors and tones are
built up in layers - so that what looks like orange is
actually a glaze of red on top of yellow. Oil paint is
particularly striking with this technique, as the oil
itself changes the way that light reflects off of and
refracts through the colors (much the way that sunlight
changes as it moves through water), giving the painting
a luminous depth unique to oils."
